Unlike other languages, devoting one or two years to learning Java will not make you an expert. It has a large developer community around the world and plenty of online forums available to help each other out. Java is a highly standardized but exhaustive language. It is good for small and medium projects. It is good for large and complex projects. It offers OOP (object-oriented programming) as an option that is ignored in most projects. It has many packaging and deployment utilities. There is no method overloading, but methods and functions can have optional parameters. There is method overriding and overloading. It has a richer set of API as compared to PHP. It is compiled and strongly-typed language. It is a general-purpose programming language.
